The Brewery at the CIA is primarily a classroom where bachelor鈥檚-level students learn about the ingredients, equipment, and techniques required to produce ales and lagers in the Art and Science of Brewing course. The class, introduced in 2015, helps future food professionals think differently about beer, elevating its status as a fine beverage on a level with wine.

鈥淲e're thrilled to win a silver medal for our Class Project Stay Sharp Saison in the Taste NY Governor鈥檚 Cup Craft Beer Competition,鈥 said Hutch Kugeman, head brewer at The Brewery at the CIA. 鈥淏reweries across New York are crafting amazing beer and the fact that we won for a beer created with help from the students in the Art and Science of Brewing class is especially gratifying to both Professor John Fischer and me.鈥

Kugeman鈥檚 beers have won numerous awards at events including the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, North American Beer Awards, and TAP New York Craft Beer and Food Festival. Before joining The Brewery at the CIA, Kugeman was founding brewer at Crossroads Brewing Company in Athens, NY, which won The Matthew Vassar Brewers鈥 Cup for Best Craft Beer Brewery in the Hudson Valley and the inaugural John Calen Memorial Award for best Pale Ale in New York State.
