Edlong Dairy Technologies Endows Scholarship for Culinary Science Majors at the CIA

Hyde Park, NY 鈥 Edlong Dairy Technologies, a global designer and manufacturer of dairy flavors and ingredients headquartered in Chicago, IL, has made a major gift to The Culinary Institute of America to educate the flavor scientists of tomorrow. The company has endowed a scholarship fund for students majoring in Culinary Science at the college. Beginning this spring, two standout students per year who have reached junior class standing will each receive $5,000 towards their studies.

鈥淧artnering with the CIA鈥檚 Culinary Science program gives Edlong another opportunity to live our mission, creating a legacy that enriches the lives of these talented students,鈥 says Edlong Dairy Technologies President and CEO Laurette Rondenet-Smith. 鈥淓very day, we combine the art of culinary creativity with the science of food technology. Supporting the education of tomorrow鈥檚 culinary scientists is a natural fit.鈥

The scholarship is named in memory of Ms. Rondenet-Smith鈥檚 father, Eugene L. Rondenet, who joined Edlong in the 1960s and eventually became its sole owner. The business was founded in 1914 by Edward Long, a supplier of flavors and fragrances to Midwestern bakeries.

鈥淭he Culinary Institute of America is grateful to Edlong for recognizing the importance of flavor science and science education as a whole for the future of culinary arts,鈥 says Dr. Victor Gielisse, CIA vice president of advancement and business development. 鈥淪cience is such an integral part of what today鈥檚 culinarians are required to know, and Edlong will be helping numerous CIA students in the coming years further their culinary science knowledge.鈥

Culinary Science launched as a major at the CIA鈥檚 New York campus in 2013. It is one of three bachelor鈥檚 degree majors students can pursue鈥攁long with Management and Applied Food Studies鈥攁fter completing associate degree studies in Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts. The program is built on the CIA鈥檚 foundation of core culinary techniques and traditions, and consists of junior- and senior-year studies. The major prepares graduates for successful careers in the world鈥檚 most advanced restaurants and in the research kitchens of leading foodservice companies.
