Hyde Park, NY 鈥 The senior class of the Food Business Management program at The Culinary Institute of America recently hosted two benefit dinners to raise funds for charities and a new CIA scholarship. The dinners raised about $17,000 from ticket sales, silent auctions, and raffles. These capstone events allowed students to put everything learned over the course of four years of their CIA education into a real-life situation, providing guests with the very best experience. Not only did planning these events offer them practice, but it also gave them an opportunity to help their fellow classmates through scholarships at the college, and to support the local community.
On June 29, the first group of students successfully executed a fun and entertaining summer-through-the-decades-themed dinner called About that Summer.... This event featured nine mouthwatering classic dishes from the 1960s to now and into the future. More than 110 attendees helped raise over $9,000 to benefit the Senior
Capstone Charity Event Scholarship at the CIA and Mental Health of America of Dutchess County.
The second event, on July 13, was called The Secret Garden. The class transformed the college鈥檚 main student dining venue into a magical garden through the decor and menu. The event was inspired by the famous Frances Hodgson Burnett book and raised over $7,000 for the Senior Capstone Charity Event Scholarship and the students鈥 choice charity, The WARrior Fund, to support families with children who have rare heart defects. This was chosen because the organization has a close connection to one of the students in the class.
The Senior Capstone Charity Event Scholarship is new for this semester. It was established by Dr. Raimundo Gaby, a 1997 CIA graduate and professor of the Foodservice Management course who wanted to help students who will take this class in the future. Juniors in the Food Business Management bachelor鈥檚 degree program with a GPA above 3.0 are eligible for this need-based $5,000 scholarship.
