San Antonio High School Students Compete for Scholarships to The Culinary Institute of America

San Antonio, TX 鈥 Students from three San Antonio-area high schools will be competing for scholarships to The Culinary Institute of America at a cook-off at the college on Saturday, April 16.

The three high schools鈥擫ouis D. Brandeis, John Marshall, and South San Antonio鈥攁re each sending four team members and an alternate to the CIA鈥檚 campus at The Pearl. Once there, they will receive a 鈥渕ystery basket鈥 of ingredients from which they will have to create a three-course menu. Teams will have 30 minutes to set up their station and develop their menu, followed by two hours to prepare a first course (soup, salad, or appetizer), main course, and dessert to serve four. Competitors must use all the items in the basket.

The competition will run from 8 a.m. to noon, with a staggered starting time for each team. Six chefs from the CIA faculty will serve as judges, grading the students on both their work in the kitchen as well as the presentation and taste of their dishes.

Each member of the winning team will earn a $1,500 scholarship to the CIA. Members of the second-place team will each receive a $1,000 CIA scholarship, and each third-place team member will get a $500 scholarship to the college.

The CIA San Antonio offers associate degrees in Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts. Graduates can then transfer to the college鈥檚 New York campus to complete bachelor鈥檚 degrees in Management, Culinary Science, or Applied Food Studies.
