Singapore Restaurateur Tjioe Delivers Keynote at the CIA Commencement

Singapore 鈥 Andrew Tjioe, president of the Restaurant Association of Singapore and executive chairman of Tung Lok Restaurants, Ltd., delivered the commencement address to graduates of in September. Mr. Tjioe advised bachelor鈥檚 degree recipients that their outlook on life will help define their success.

鈥淟earn from every mistake. Your heart can be broken when you fail, but don鈥檛 let your spirit be beaten,鈥 said Mr. Tjioe, whose Singapore-based company now owns, manages, and franchises more than 40 restaurants throughout Asia. 鈥淚f you keep being positive about everything, your life will be full of positive energy. If you aspire to change the society you live in, then you will live the life of a social activist.鈥

A restaurateur with 35 years of experience, Mr. Tjioe has earned many career honors, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and both the regional Restaurateur of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence. He also received the International Star Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences and twice earned Wine & Dine magazine鈥檚 Singapore Restaurateur of the Year Award.

These graduates began their CIA studies in 2013 after completing a three-year diploma program in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology. Credits from previous business management courses transferred, allowing students to complete their four-year degree with two years of the CIA鈥檚 unparalleled hands-on culinary training and certain required liberal arts courses.
