11-13-23 District Update

Welcome to the District Update!

I want to remind our school community that the next Board of Education meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday, November 14th at the District Office at 7 p.m.  As I shared in the previous District update, recommendations from the DEI Calendar Subcommittee will be presented for consideration for the 2024-2025 school year.  We have had very robust, in-depth conversations regarding cultural and religious holidays and legislation being considered by the Governor, that have helped shape our recommendations.

During the Board of Education meeting, we’ll also spotlight Maple West and Forest Elementary, and have a special recognition for a teacher who jumped into action to help save a student’s life.  All of our meetings are streamed on the District YouTube channel.

Congratulations to qh88 North High School’s Angelena Moscovic, Jax Rodriguez, Janessa Velez, Annie Drott, Nora Braun-Kolbe, Aidan Hazard, Hadia Muzzammil, and Ava Strefeler. In late October, they competed in the Buffalo AKG “Art Alive” competition in downtown Buffalo.  Using Nick Cave’s “Speak Louder” sculpture, the group took home top honors for their tableaux – or re-creation – of this iconic piece.  Please be sure to check out the video and photo project celebrating their success that is available on social media and the District’s YouTube channel.

I also want to congratulate Miles Seifert, Theo Ayson, Noah Meyer and Charles Smith for representing qh88 East at the 10th Annual Band Against Bullying – an event designed to raise awareness for bullying related issues.  Miles wrote an original song which the group performed at the UB Center for Performing Arts.  Congratulations and great job!

For all of our students and families, but especially our elementary school students who will continue to enjoy outdoor recess during every season when appropriate, please dress accordingly. As a District, we know the value of our younger students being able to enjoy time with their classmates outside of the classrooms.

For families with students who walk to school or ride the bus, please make sure students are prepared for the elements as they make their way to and from school each day.

With that in mind, our school building’s lost and found areas are already full of items that have been forgotten or misplaced by students.  Please check with your respective schools to see if gloves, hats, sweatshirts and even water bottles have been turned in.

As a reminder, there is no school November 22nd, 23rd, and 24th due to the Thanksgiving Recess.  Be sure to enjoy time with family and friends.  And, don’t forget, the PTSA Craft Show is December 2nd and 3rd.  Information has been shared in the building and District newsletters regarding student vendors and volunteers.  If you have any questions, please be sure to check out the informational flyer.

Stay warm and enjoy the week!
