Water Safety in Our Schools
Water Testing Q&A
On October 13, 2020, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) sent a notification to school superintendents and their representatives that the initial water (lead) sampling deadline for the 2020 Compliance Year was being extended from December 31, 2020 to June 30, 2021 due to COVID-19. The NYDOH extended the lead sampling deadline to provide schools with additional time to complete proper testing in accordance with the requirements specified by law. It is required that the water sampling process must occur when the school is in "normal operating conditions”. This stipulation prevented qh88 from initiating the water sampling tests until this spring.
The New York State action level (remediation efforts are necessary) for school drinking water outlets is when test results are greater than 15 ppb (parts per billion). A test result that is greater than 15ppb states that the outlet must not be used for drinking water purposes until it is remediated. The remediation process may result in replacing the fixture, adding filtration to the outlet, or labeling the outlet as not being available for drinking water purposes.
Any water outlet that exceeds the state’s action level of 15 ppb (parts per billion) is removed from service immediately. Those outlets will be remediated and retested by the certified laboratory before being used again. Remediation may include changing the faucet/fixture, adding filtration, or adding appropriate labeling to certain fixtures as non-drinking water outlets such as custodial sinks and outside water faucets. Bottled water will be available for student and staff use if necessary.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Thomas Maturski, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Management Services, at 716/626-8012
